Student Letters: Meet Ethan!

It’s time this week for SAE’s student letters feature – Meet Ethan! Every week, we feature one or two student letters of kids applying to our program for the upcoming school year. It’s a great way to learn more about a student and find out if he or she is a good fit for your family! You can meet all of our students on our photolisting and submit a FREE application to learn more about each kid!

Student Letters: Meet Ethan

Dear Host Family,

My name is Ethan. I am 16 years old now, and I currently live in a small city in northwestern China. My school is the best high school in the province. I am proud that I can study in that school. I decided to be an exchange student after this year, which seemed puzzling to a lot of people around me, especially my schoolmates. I will have an extra year of high school, and that seems like suffering to them. But actually I don’t care so much about other people’s thoughts. I think the experience of being an exchange student will be awesome, and it is an opportunity to help me to get used to life away from home. I have an extroverted personality, which makes me easy for me to get to know people and to fit in. I like to make friends with people with different cultures, values, and experience, which can be so much fun. To me, the process of building connections between each other is the way a friendship starts. I am also very inquisitive. I am fond of always trying new things, because I enjoy the feeling of learning. Since I like learning new things, I am a versatile person with many different interests. I like playing tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming, playing the piano, and painting. I just take them as hobbies. I think once people take hobbies too seriously, they may lose their fun and interest in the activity.

My dream is to be a backpacker, which sounds pretty ridiculous to many people. But, travelling is the thing I’ve loved doing for many years. I have been to Malaysia, Thailand, America, Korea, and Japan before, and I feel that I fell in love with travelling. Every trip is just amazing; I enjoy the feeling of being on the road. The destination is not the purpose of a trip; the purpose is to embrace different cultures, learn things and find out about yourself. I will keep on doing that, and that is one of the reasons why I want to be an exchange student.

It is hard to express my feelings about being an exchange student. All I can say is that I am pretty excited, but also sort of nervous. It will be a totally different life and I may change lot in that year. I hope that life abroad will teach me confidence and independence. I hope I will become more mature, and think about things more thoroughly. I also hope I can catch on at school quickly, and finish my academic year successfully.

I hope I will bring you much happiness, and not trouble. If I do something wrong or make you uncomfortable, please tell me, and I will do my best to fix those problems. Also, I am more than happy to help you with some chores, so if you need any help just let me know. Furthermore, I was a volunteer of AFS program, which means our family also hosted an exchange student last year. We really spent an amazing year together. Our exchange student and I and he are just like brothers. We looked after each other and even did some traveling together. I will never forget him and the year we spent together. So I sincerely hope that we can have a wonderful year, and if you want to learn Chinese or Chinese culture, I will be happy to teach you!

Sincerely yours,

Ethan
