As one of our first students that applied to our exchange program for the 2016-2017 academic school year, we’ve had plenty of time to get to know Maddie and her interests. Just last month we finally found a good match for her with a family from a rural town in Kansas! Maddie has many different hobbies including playing piano, drawing, and reading. She can’t wait to spend a year in the US, and her host family can’t wait to meet her.
When we spoke with her host family, we asked the question we ask all host families: why are you interested in participating in an exchange program? They expressed that they “enjoy learning about different cultures, learning different languages, experiencing different foods,” which really excited us as we know Maddie enjoys cooking for her own family! We can’t wait to hear about their adventures cooking together. The host family also told us about their previous positive hosting experiences with two other students. All in all, they are so excited to be introducing Maddie to life in the United States! “We are a very real, honest, compassionate American family and hope we can educate a young person about our small town way of life. It is a farm community and we are a family of beef ranchers. It is a way of life!”
Many students from abroad are looking for a new way of life – a new experience that differs from what they are used to back home. We’re excited to see what Maddie and her host family are able to share with one another as we help her transition to life in rural Kansas! The last thing the host mother shared was “we enjoy teaching others about our lifestyles and are happy to share our home with someone new.” We couldn’t be happier for Maddie’s placement and know she will have a great time getting to know her host family.
Our family in Kansas clearly appreciates what student exchange is all about: interacting with people different cultures and sharing experiences to broaden perspectives. If this is something you care about as well, view our photolisting to meet some of our students and apply to be a Host Family today!
